FUEL DELIVERY

GOOD MORNING ALL,
Let me lay out what happened; then I am looking for possible reasons. I left my house, the otheray to pick-up my
Water Buffalo, at the boat yard, about a 5 mile drive. After I got off the hwy, doing about 40MPH I stopped at a traffic light, the engine died. It would not re-start, pedal to the floor, let it sit for 15 min, no good. My son towed me to the yard where I left the M overnight. Went back yesterday AM and she fire right up, with lots of white smoke, running real rough. I pulled the plug on the carb bowl and energized the elect fuel pump, let it drain for about 10 sec. Installed the plug and she fired up again and ran smooth. Hooked up the Water Buffalo and towed it about 10 miles, to get diesel fuel. no problem. The air temp was 90 and humid. Vapor lock?? stuck float neddle?? I left the Water Buffalo, full of diesl at the boat yard and used the M most of yesterday, no problem. Yesterdays air temp was 83.. I have two in-line fuel filters after the pump. the pump is located in the engine compartment. YOUR THOUGHTS. Dont need it happening again.
THANKS
BOB

Issue could be several things, however 1 for sure is the location of your electric pump. It should be mounted as near the tank as possible. Unless you have a pump of special design; it is designed to push fuel, not pull it, and getting it away from engine heat will be a plus also.

I agree with Charles.
I had similar problems where my truck would run fine, but when switched off, would not start again. I had an electric fuel pump mounted on the inner fender beside the
engine which I think was getting vapour locked and was trying to pull instead of push so I bought a new Facet pump and mounted it in the correct position right next to the bottom of my fuel tank.
I also adjusted the float in the carb as it was too low and was flooding.
I havent had any problems since.

Cheers

Bob . When you relocate the fuel pump, You should think about installing one of the filters between the gas tank and pump. This way you can keep the gas going to your pump clean. Also by using a clear filter you can see what's going on in your tank, Rust, sentiment.

My Facet pump includes a built-in filter but I think your idea of a clear filter between the tank and pump is a good one!

HI SAL AND ALL,

I have a see-thru filter, and another in-line filter between the pump and the carb. The see-thru is clean. After I got the truck running I drained a bit of gas from the tank, to ck for junk and water; it ran clean. The elect fuel pump is a Bendix. it has an internal filter that can be cleaned by unscrewing the twist lock top. I have bought marine gen sets that have these same pumps; they are engine mounted and draw fuel from either the main tanks or a day tank. But , like i said in the original post, "I dont want this happening again".So I will remount the pump near the tank, hopefully this will avoid vapor lock, which is what I think caused my M to stall at the traffic signal. We will see.
AGAIN THANKS
BOB

Bob. Did you check your distributor ? I recently had trouble with mine, She started stalling on me and then it wouldn't start. I found the plate that the points are mounted on came loose. Just a quick thought.....

HI SAL, Good thought, I will ck that too once the rain stops. i had the dist out of the engine last year, when I did the re-build. Everything was fine then, but two summers of fun and NY roads could losen anything up.
THANKS

How would you like an exchange visit to Scotland? Then you'll see what rain, wind and cold is like :D :D

10" of rain in one day, Has never happened before in the area around JFK Airport, not even the huricanes that have hit us carried that much rain. If it had happened in the winter and it had been snow it would have been 100 inches. Thanks God.
