My water pump works, but I can hear that the bearings are tired.

Should I rebuild or replace it?

Someone mentioned NAPA rebuild services - is this avail. at any NAPA store, or just the ones who employ "old timers" - you know, the folks behind the desk that are mechanics, too.

Is this a rebuild that I could reasonably do (experience, yes - machining capabilities, no).

Are you sure you are hearing the water pump? I have rebuilt them but have not seen any with bearings, only bushings. In my experience, if it isnt leaking you dont need to do anything. I have seen then seep through the shaft seal after sitting awhile, and then after running they seal back up. I think a lot of water pumps get replaced prematurely.

No leaking - may be bushings (I mistyped). It is working, but I'd rather fix it before I get stuck, especially when it is below zero out.

Broke down last year about this time - it gets dark real early this time of year, and faded OD green becomes almost invisible at night (go figure!). Only problem is when you're disabled on a back country road where the speed limit is just a technicality.

We can sell new water pumps right now cheaper than a rebuilt unit will cost. That is good for today, who knows what tomorrow may bring?

NAPA and many other retailers are using Cardone as their rebuilder. I know they still do it on a rebuild and return basis, usually takes at least 2 weeks on turn time. I know of no stores that offer the service in house anymore. Many have dropped these pumps as rebuilt units from their inventory these days, thus the rebuild and return policy is all they have to offer.
