Ok - got the heli-coil done on the carb!! No leaks even - thanks Charles!

I ordered a rebuild kit from MW. My son opened the plastic case... we looked at each other....hmmm. Is there a place that rebuilds carbs? The kit was $55, the heli was $42, I just wonder if there is a place to have it done and what cost. I know MW is $255 on exh/$300ish w/o exh. Any recommendations?

Rebuilding the carb (or fuel pump, for that matter) really isn't that difficult. The reproduced Carter carb manual that the vendors are selling has the procedure well laid out in step-by-step fashion. The first time I did one, it took about a day. I was really taking my time. I knock one out in couple of hours now, about 3/4 of the time is spent in cleaning.

Invest in a couple of cans of carb cleaner. It helps in cleaning out all the small passages.

We offer rebuild service if you need it. Our rate is $60 per hour. Rebuilding it isn't that hard, of course that's up to you whether you feel you want to tackle it. Having some good quality carb cleaner in volume so when it's disassembled you can completely immerse every piece for an hour or so is a must for a good cleaning. After that, rinse with water from your hose nozzle & blow out EVERY tiny passage with compressed air REALLY WELL. We do this as added insurance just to be sure all passages are open; we always have aerosol brake cleaner on hand, using the adapter nozzle that comes with every can, insert it into every carb opening in every housing & spray a small amount. If all passages are open, you will see the spray exit at another opening. If you spray into a passage & don't see the spray exit somewhere else, further steps for cleaning will be needed such as removing the aluminum clean-out plugs for the purpose of rodding or better access with the compressed air. After the spray test has verified all is clean; blow out all passages well once again. You can now reassemble & set up using new kit components.

There's a guy in Fla. that does a great job rebuilding the carb I can't find the link right now but maybe Bill L will chime in on this. I think the guy does ultrasonic cleaning and they look brand new. $100.00 bucks I think, but a very simple do it yourself project.
I have rebuilt my fuel pump, though it takes three hands I only used the two I had, three years later still works great..................

Thanks for the great information. I keep reaching for the checkbook instead of the tool box. I'll print off my manual and hand it to my 17 year old!!

Download the carter carb (I don't have the web address but someone here will I'm sure), then follow the procedure step by step and do it yourself and save some money. I had never rebuilt a carb in my life before I rebuilt mine and I got through the steps with no problems at all. Its not difficult, time comsuming but not difficult... Definitely a do it yourself project, unless of course you have money to burn....

Excellent plan! The challenge will do him good, and it'll be some satisfaction when he's driving on something he rebuilt himself.

I just finished rebuilding my carb. I used the Alan Bowes instructions that I had downloaded a long time ago. Problem was it didn't save the pictures. I see his site is no longer available. Does anyone have the electrons complete with pictures??? If you want the words only I can send you those.

Hmmmnnn, did not know the site is gone now. However the famous Dave Ahl book has it in its entirety if anyone still has a copy. I printed the instructions off the site a while ago, and have it in a file someplace in one of my toolbox drawers. I'll see if I can find it.

One minor gotcha I ran into is that the small brass fitting in the base of the bowl needs a slightly modified screwdriver. Do it right the first time, and you'll get it out. I botched mine up, and the kit I had didn't have a replacement. That was the hardest part for me.
