I have to replace the gasket on top of the tank where the sending unit is is there anything I should put on the gasket like a sealer or something? Any other things to check while I am replacing it?

The best thing you can do is go to your local NAPA & get a new rubber gasket, listed in the Balkamp Catalog in the gauge section. The cork isn't much at best.

I replaced sender/pickup gaskets using a rolled gasket material specific for fuel applications from NAPA. You may want to remove the vent off the top of the pickup while you have it off. Mine was crude-a-plenty.
