Like the subject line says, what was the original colour of the 251 engine in the M37 CDN's ?

Good question. The original color in the US versions was silver. There's every likelihood that the Canadian models were also silver, considering that Dodge was in charge of production, but that's no guarantee. To be honest, I really don't know where you might look to find out, either.

Whoa! Not
that shade of green, anyway. Looks like it got attacked by a platoon of leprechauns at some time or other.

My father was a John Dear mechanic so I'm thinking that at one point many years ago he pulled the engine and possibly rebuilt it. Did I mention it runs superb ?

My CDN M152 has a gold 251 engine with an Army rebuild tag attached. It looks like the only coat of paint.
