Can I assume that a 1953 M37 transmission will fit in a 1954 M37?

Of course you may...assuming that the rest of the driveline has not been altered.

If you still have a T245 engine, it will match up just fine.

Thanks, all else is stock and I assumed that the Gov. didn't do much changing through the years but, you never know unless you ask. My trans is suspect, the reverse plunger? fell out and and I found some large chips in the bottom of the trans. I don't see and sign of the clip, that may be some of the chips. I haven't found the spring yet although it may be in position yet in the top cover. I have removed the top cover and nothing looks ugly in the trans except the large straight toothed gear in the rear and it just has the back edges of the teeth chewed off. The only other thing that looks off is the syncro assembly, it looks like the ring with the pins in it is in two pieces and the whole thing is loose. I am trying to find another transmission but that can be a pig in a poke as to condition also. I don't have a problem removing mine and rebuilding if I can find the parts. I don't know where to look or what to look for yet.

The overhaul of the NP 88950 is detailed in TM 9-8031-2 Pages 142 to 187.

See TB 9-2320-212-20/1 for the differences between the early M37 tranny and the later tranny.

The overhaul of the NP 420 is detailed in TM9-2520-232-35

Parts are readily available.

Can anyone tell me how to tell the difference between the shifting towers of a NP 420 and the 88950 early transmissions just by looking at them ?

Look where the shift lever stub shaft ball goes in the top of the tower. The late style NP420 has a retainer that can be pressed down and turned counter clockwise to remove it and allow the stub shaft to pull out of the tower. The early trans does not have the retainer, the stub shaft has to come out from the inside and after removal of all the shift rail assemblies. It is quite a project to remove one from the early trans.

The early or late style trans will fit any truck as a complete unit, however the internal parts, or the top covers of the 2 transmissions are not interchangable
