Transfer case shifts from 2HI to 4HI on its own.

I don't know if the following is a problem or indicative of one in the future. My truck seems to jump into 4HI a lot on its own. I push the lever forward to 2HI, and before I know it it is back in the 4HI position. I am thinking of rigging a strap up to keep the truck in 2HI. Do any of the gurus out there have any advice?

This problem is fairly typical. It could be as simple as a worn poppet ball, a weak ball spring, or worn "V" groove in the shift shaft. Wear on the mating surfaces of gear teeth and gear spline/shaft spline areas can also cause the problem. The ball and spring can be serviced from outside the case, anything eles will require case disassembly.
The strap method you mentioned may work temporarily if the issue is ball or spring, if it is gears and splines, it likely won't work and can create further damage as it may be forced out of gear under stress. If the issues are internal, a complete t/case rebuild is the best way to go.

Once again, thanks for the good advice Charles. I will keep an eye on it and monitor how bad it gets.
