Brake spring pliers work, but they are a pain in the ass. I have a set and they work, but I was thinking of welding something onto them to lengthen the handles to give more leverage.

I just use vise grips and a large screw diver. Works ok for me. (still have all my fingers and skin on my knuckels)

I use a screwdriver that will slip thru the loop in the end of the spring and that is also small enough to go in the hole in the shoe, and help guide it in with vise grips. Works real easy.

Vise grips and a small round, tapered pry bar is our method of installation, easy, easy. Brake spring pliers work great for removing the springs.
