An offset NP205?

Found this thread tonight.

Seems like it could be somewhat of a solution to the NP200's overheating problem. Get more oil capacity using a 205 case, and still manage to keep the offset ouputs to keep the drive shafts lined up with the pumpkins.

That is very interesting. The author says it turns 60 in tires wow that is truly abuse. Amazing that it holds together. So you are saying that using an NP 205 set up like this would let you keep the diff offset of the stock M37 and what other advantages would there be ?

FWIW, I don't consider keeping the stock axles an advantage. Everyone is scared of swapping axles, but it is quite easy in this truck, and allows stronger, cheaper, safer axles to be installed. I'd go with a divorced 205 and a pair of Danas.

The NP200 was also used on the M715 and my thinking is that if the NP200 our of a M37 can be made to work on a M715 then a NP 205 (which has been used in M715s) whould be able to be used in the M37. Just need to rework it a little....
Yes and axle swap can be done, but as Josh and I know the front takes a bit or work to make it fit and for those who may not trust their fabricating skills or want to stick with the stock axle for looks etc I think figure out how to rework the 205 would be a good option.

The downside to the NP200 is that its been know to overheat at prolonged highway speed due to the reduced amount of oil in the case. The NP205 has a larger case - thus more oil - but was never offererd in an offset configuration.
My understanding of this thread is that you can swap the front input, front output, and offset output from the NP200 to the divorced NP205 case. This means you can keep your driveshafts, and factory offset diffs while gaining a better designed, stronger Tcase with greate oil capacity.
The only down side is the 205 centered rear ouput must remain, which means the loss of the parking brake. Although I'm sure the parking brake could be adapted over. This would be the only fabrication required for such a swap. The aftermarket does make Disc Parking brakes for the 205 though if modification isn't an option.

Great ideas.
It shows me that there are many options for these trucks. As for me I think with a stock engine the NP 200 will be ok. But hey if I get another M later I would want to look at engine and drive line changes. I always thought it would be great to have a stocker and a modified one.

I'd love to have both myself. The modified ones look like so much fun!
Maybe after I finish my stock one...

The otehr reason teh 200 gets hotter is that every gear in it except the front output is powered in 2wd mode. This is not the case in the 205 straight through arrangement, and I am guessing if a 205 was modified to make it offset drive, it would suffer from heat issues as well. This would be simple to fix with a reservour, pump, cooler, and some oil jets.

Me too after I finish my stocker . I like following threads like Josh's. The inventive ideas and builds are fun to watch.

True enough, I've been led to belive that the NP200 will run cooler when converted to a center rear ouput as well. This is my plan for the moment as I can't find a divorced 205 - or afford the adapter to put a doubled 203/205 hybrid under the floor...

Master, I've got a 205 I'd let you have for $100 plus whatever shipping is... It's in good shape, no leaks. Had it in my truck for 30K.
