Front Diff/axle Rotation Question

I've rebuilt the front knuckles and before I grease and close it up, I'm curious, cause I can't remember now. When you spin the differential flange, the axle shafts spin, but it's easy to stop them spinning by hand. Is that correct? This is in the open configuration without a locker of any kind - bone stock. Thanks in advance.

In the stock configuration (no lockout hubs) if both wheels are off the ground and if the transfer case is disengaged, then yes, you should be able to freely turn and stop the hubs.

With the transfer case engaged, you should still be able to do it, but you will feel slightly more resistance.

Let me fall back and regroup a bit here. You said "when you spin the differential flange..." By that, I presume you refer to the big central (driven) gear in the differential?? If so, then yes, the axles will spin but you can stop one of them by hand. When you do this, however, the other will turn faster. You can't spin the differential gear and stop both axles without stopping the differential gear.

Thanks Lifer

My arms are only long enough to stop one side while spinning the diff flange!
