Electric fuel pump questions

I need to replace my fuel pump and I would like to go with a new electric unit. I did some reaserch on older posts and read that a 24 volt diesel pump will work. There are several different types so I'm wondering what one to use. There are both GPH and pressure. What would be best for my 1952 M37?

I recall you need a 4psi regulator in the loop to avoid flooding the carb (per Charles) and you should also put in a safety psi switch with a tee off of the oil sender so that the pump will only run when the engine is turning. I know some guys put in a momentary push button switch into the circuit as a primer.

I can't help you on which model to buy. The one I have was made for marine (boat) use, but has been discontinued. I'm sure there's a replacement model. Mine is a 4 PSI output, so I don't use a regulator. I have a 5-PSI oil pressure switch, so that the pump will run when the compression is over 5-PSI. To get the pump and engine going, I put a massive (like 60A, I think) zener diode from the starter switch to the pump. That way, when you push the starter, the pump kicks on until the engine starts and the oil pressure switch closes. When it all starts up, the diode keeps the current from the oil pressure switch from getting back to the starter motor and doing all kind of lovely things.
No matter what setup you choose, be sure to mount the pump near the gas tank. Electric pumps push fuel much better than they pull it.

I HAVE PUT A 24V ELECT FUEL PUMP IN LINE; DUE TO THE FACT THAT I THOUGHT THE MACHINACAL ONE WAS FAULTY. TURNED OUT TO BE AN INTERNAL FAILURE OF AN OLD RUBBER LINE. I HAVE BEEN RUNNING THE ELECT NOW, FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS W/O ANY PRESSURE REGULATORS; NO PROBLEMS. IT IS A BENDIX WITN AN INTERNAL FILTER. IT APPEARS TO BE AN EX MILITARY TAKE OUT; O/D COLOR. I WILL TRY TO FIND THE SOURCE AND LEAVE ANOTHER POST.

I have a facet 24 volt unit I got off of ebay. It works great, just wired it with a fuse and relay. The fuse is 10 amps and the relay in one like you would use if you were adding fog lamps to a 12 volt system.
By pass old fuel pump?

Should I by pass the old fuel pump? I have an original filter (in the engine compartment) it looks good and clean. should I stay with it?

I went thru all the troubles of getting an elec system and then decided to have my original rebuilt because I wanted to be able to restore the vac wipers. Then&Now charges $110 and there are several rebuild kits available for DYI.
