The frame of my truck was semi-gloss black with no primer under it, just black, some of which peeled off easily when I water blasted it in prep. for sand blasting, exposing unrusted bright steel which rusted red overnight. The black in this pic is the orig. paint and the red is the surface rust which formed on the exposed frame steel.

Mine has a mixture of blue, black and green. Mostly due to paint jobs over the years.
They came black and when the GI's repainted them at the motor pool, they became overall OD or Blue.

My 52 Air Force truck frame was Strata Blue with red oxide primer. The replacement frame I am using was OD, with red oxide primer underneath.
No black on either one.

All frames were painted "chassis black" at the factory. This was a hard-finish, baked-on semi-gloss enamel. The frames were dipped in an acid bath, allowed to dry, and the etched metal was then painted without primer.
What happened after they left the factory (and when it happened) is anybody's guess.
