i just bought another fuel tank for my 63' m37 and noticed that underneath the tank there was a threaded opening that took a 3/4 pipe plug. it's located towards the front lower edge. is this stock? or was it something that someone added? my 53' m37 didn't have it and neither did the tank in my 63'.

And it should be brass, does it have a plug or just a nipple?

This tank is out of my 1952 truck and has an orig. drain valve. I believe the tank is earlier than the truck as it's serial no. is 80259056, and they were deleated after serial no. 80042080. If yours looks like this one you may have an early tank.

i have the opening at the rear of the tank. this 3/4 pipe opening is underneath the tank towards the front leading edge. it looks like the threads are brass but i cant tell if its been added or not because the tank has had the renu process. everything else on the tank looks the same as my tank from my 63'. were there any other models that would work in the m37 or do i just have an oddball?

i should have been more clear;the threads are female and they protrude slightly from the bottom.i went to a local hardware store and bought a 3/4 brass plug and it fit perfectly.

My truck has this type of tank. Although I don't thin kthe plug is 3/4. Mine is 1/8th pipe thrad, and about a 7/16ths square plug.

My 54 has this opening. It has a brass valve for draining a litle fuel out of the tank. nice if you need it. I kept it original

okay guys and thanks. i was curious because i hadn't seen this extra opening in any literature. i guess now that i have plenty of drainage if needed!

All my spare tanks have the drain plug but they are all are 1/4" pipe thread. Same thing on the tanks in my trucks.

I have only the back-side plug.

I wonder if it is from a Generator Trailer, Carter, does your Generator still have the fuel tank?

Yeah Bruce, it's at Ralph's so no pix, but it has a direct read mechanical gauge in a short neck mounted directly on top of the tank and would not be confused with a orig. M37 tank. It may be a newer style generator tank with the top mounted gauge, the older tanks may not have the gauge, I don't know as I have never seen another, but it is the same size as a truck tank and has drains like my other two M37 tanks.

I think you answered your own question when you said the tank had been through the re-nu process. Different dealers do it different & it also depends on what was required to re-new your specific tank. They cut holes (usually 3) in order to blast the inside of the tank, some weld up the access holes, in my opinion, in your case they simply welded in a bung & gave you a much needed large bore drain plug. I'd be glad they did me the favor.

I am not sure when they stopped, but the early M37 tanks had the drain cock, the later ones did not.

TM 9-8030 states they were deleated after serial no. 80042080, after that the bung was retained and the drain cock was replaced with a pipe plug. I suppose this was a cost reducing measure but how much could be saved eliminating a fifty cent item? Spread over the production run of over one hundred thousand trucks I guess enough to warrant the deleation.
