Clutch Replacement

Hey guys I am thinking I am going to have to replace the clutch in my M37. New pressure plate, clutch plate and throw out bering.
How big of a job is that going to be? I have a friend that is a mechanic. If I was younger I would attempt it but not anymore but I can still help. Is it an all day job? I have no idea what a place would charge to do one that is familiar in working on one.
Thanks for any advice you can give.
Steve

There's nothing special or particularly difficult about an M37 clutch, but time required will depend on the tools and equipment available and your experience level. I'd allow a full day if you've never done one before.

slk,
One thing I found useful is toe fab up a cradle to fit to your jack that stabilizes the transmission. I just used some scrap wood and a ratchet strap. It makes it easier (and safer!) to deal with that big lump of iron. Make sure the hardware for the intermediate shaft are in good shape and when you install them use some red loctite and torque them properly. They have been loose on the trucks I've worked on.

Great tip Andy!
The biggest PITA is getting the floorboard bolts started and back in once the job is done!

It's not a difficult job. You can do it yourself; I'm installing my WC63 transmission this afternoon after replacing the clutch, pressure plate, and throw out bearing, and I'm probably older than you! Take your time, take lots of photos, and enjoy the work.
Here some things to make your life easier:
The relevant TMs addressing clutch replacement and transmission removal/installation.
Transmission jack
A vehicle lift is bonus.
A person topside and a person on his back beneath the vehicle to help remove and install the transmission.
Clutch alignment tool--you can buy plastic ones for about ten bucks.
Clean the threads in the bell housing as well as the cap screws; this makes hand starting and tightening much easier!
You can probably borrow these special tools and one or more folks in your local club. Free food and adult beverages afterwards....
