The offer is still open if you want to look at a restored truck, Jim.

I'll have you know it gets truly frigid out here in western Washington! It gets all the way down into the low +40's to high +30's at night! In the day time it might only make it up to the mid +50's at most! It's cold I tell ya'! Serious, serious cold! You should listen to people out here whine about the terrible "arctic" cold they have to suffer.
That poor boy is just too young and innocent to know how cold he is. We often had to tell our children; "Go put a coat on, your mother's cold!"

Morning low today here in Nawth Care-O-Lina was 21 and high was 48. It seems bitter cold but that was because two day's ago it almost got to 70. However if it gets much colder I will have to wrap my M37 tires in barb wire just so I can get traction on the cold cold roads.
I actually like NC weather. Around here they say, if you don't like the weather wait a day or two and it will change. Tuesday I had to plug the block heater in on my M37 Hercules diesel to get the block temp warm enough to get it to start. I don't know how they do it in Alaska where I was born. I like working up sweat in January in a T-shirt hauling firewood with my M37 and M101 trailer. Sure beats the cold dampness of NJ where I grew up as a kid.

We were able to get a little time this sunday for stripping the engine down some. We were able to get the gear box off as expected, but the bell housing is not coming off. It looks like all the bolts are removed, the bottom and front covers are removed. The bell housing comes out about 1/8" or so and stops. Is there a trick to this I'm missing? Is there something inside there that I need to remove before it releases?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
And, on another note, Julie (the wife) kept taking the wrenches from the kids and volunteering to pull stuff apart. I was like, "Julie really you don't have to.. " And she looked up,
"No really I like doing this, its fun!"
I just kinda' looked at her somewhat stunned. "Really?"

Wasn't bragging, was shocked. Well at least I didn't mean to..
No hints on removing the bell housing? Anyone?
The military manuals don't seem to say anything about it.

From the looks of no.3 cylinder I would say its definitely going past the rings. Whenever there's that much ash on the piston and clean around the outer portion of the piston your rings are either worn or stuck, most likely in your case, stuck.

The bell housing will only move back a short distance until it contacts the flywheel. There are 2 bolts near the bottom of the block on both sides and 2 at the top of the housing. In between the 2 bottom bolts on each side is a dowel pin that correctly aligns the housing on the block. My guess is the dowel pins need to be driven back slightly so they disengage from the block. Then the housing will lift straight up off the flywheel.

Kids had to stay home do homework, but at least we had a little time to put in on the engine this sunday. Almost ready to bolt onto the engine stand.

Lets hope this image link works..
Pulling bell housing. Turns out you have to drop everything, clutch & flywheel out the bottom first. Ey yiyi!
And.. it turns out theres a guy in our area that specializes in Flat head engine machine work. Woo hoo!
