Thanks. I did see the pic on the VPW winch page......I just wasn't sure if that was the "correct" part or something similar. I'll keep an eye out for one as I don't have one on my winch chain. For those who don't know what we're talking about......here's the pic from the VPW website;

without seeing one taken apart, this is just a guess...

but i would say the nut at the back gets taken out, the cable gets pushed through the nut until it's flush with the end or protrudes some amount, maybe 1/2"? then the nut and cable are threaded back into the clevis. probably the nut has some tapered fingers on the end of it that wedge into a tapered hole in the clevis, so the tighter the nut is threaded in, the tighter it pinches the cable. It may even have a spiral pattern inside to match the spiral of the cable.

again, this is all just a guess, but that's what it looks like from the one photo

I was looking up winch info in TM 9-8031-2 today and I saw figure 222 on page 447. It is a drawing of the LU-4 winch, with the thimble and cable clamps which are on my truck. I think there must have been a couple of original cable terminations over the years
