well the few that looked at it loved it, and I'm bringing it to a car show in September so I'll find out then

the m37 was my first vehicle, I taught my self how to drive and used it as my daily driver for 4 years. witch in turn fostered respect for heavy trucks( something that is sorely lacking ) the m37 has taken me on many adventures it has also shaped my life and the people in it .

living in Vancouver BC with some of the worst congestion and drivers on the planet the m37 is the ideal commuter rig. it's big and scary but will easily fit in a "small car only" spot. its made of metal and will not be intimidated by any plastic truck or SUV. the m37 has a hand throttle that can be pulled out in heavy traffic so you can sit back and let the gap grow. it also has a brake light that is operated by hand if respect is needed

one sunny day I pulled out of the drive on my way to the store, plodding along @ 60k/40mph when a bran new benz flew up from behind and planted himself inches from my bumperets. Unfazed buy these tactics I slowly increased my speed to 70k as I was quickly approaching a 90 degree bend in the road with the corner coming up fast I reached up and turned off the brake lights. a quick dab on the brakes to shift the weight to the steers I rocketed around the bend. a quick glance in the mirror reveled the skill and capability of the merc and its operator that was now sitting with four flats on the sidewalk

on another hot sunny day I was stuck in traffic, board as heck when a cruiser with a couple constables rolled up on my passenger side with windows down I asked my buddy in the passenger seat if he wanted to see something funny and to make a path out of the grid lock. he looked at me with a puzzled face as I pulled the hand throttle out a few notches along with the choke....... within seconds cherry's were flashing, eyes watering and a hole opened up so I could take a side road.

I'll give you my answer when I'm done putting mine back together. Definetley has more parts than a M-151 and is more time consuming than restoring a jeep. Parts are also heavier but not heavier than the parts on my deuce.

I am seeing the benefit... the open cab, the big truck feel in a compact size.. the hauling capability.. it fits well in my garage, albiet I still cant park in the garage with the top up

now that I am getting near completion of all the systems, and the truck running as it should, I am liking it more so!

I am getting anxious to get my M37 running and be able to let it stretch it's legs. It has not run for too many years, and the last 3 or so, it has been looking at the inside of my garage door. My engine is sitting in the frame, but still a couple of weeks away from breathing hard.
In the mid 70's I worked in field service at the Delemar Silver Mine in South West Idaho. They had an M201 that was purchased to use as a service and utility vehicle due to the hood deep slurry mud in the mine pit. It just continued to go well after any "Normal" truck had drowned out. It was one of those things that grew on you like a Loyal Ugly Dog! The more slim it got you through, the more Love & Respect you had for it.

saw my first one in Ripley OHio, 25 years ago, driven by the Mayor and the idea that it was a cool, "manly" truck stuck with me. This is a vehicle that raises your sperm count just sitting in it.
Finally in my 50s with "disposable income" looked at several, but preferred the winch truck. Couldn't turn down a runner for $2,200 and trailered/drove it home that night.
I have no intentions of doing anything close to a restoration, as someone pointed out it is a poor investment compared to the value of doing a proper civvy Power wagon.
my whole purpose is to use it and enjoy, rust, dents and all. Someday a repower to more powerful gas or a 4BT..who knows, but anything I do will be CHEAP !

Because I can get better gas mileage with it than I can with my '62 International crew cab! (10.8 compared to 10.1)

Rode in my first M37 as a Civil Air Patrol cadet back in 1975. We were using it to transport old newspapers to the rcycler to generate cash for our "squadron".

We were hauling butt southbound on I-65 through Louisville when we were pulled over by the local gendarmes. Insisted that we were supposed to have 2 taillights. The one original taillight was awful dim as it was. Got out of that without a ticket. The M37 did not survive the trip. The driver (not me) had been screaming along at 55 mph. Spun a bearing.

For some reason that truck stuck with me. During my 13 yrs in the Army I drove many things, from VW vans in FRG to M151s CUCV, Duece and all the way up to tracked vehivles, M577 and M548

Through it all, there were only two Army vehicles that I wanted, one was a WWII jeep from watching episodes of Rat Patrol, and the good old M37.

First one I got was the GPW, and it was a screaming deal. Then I ended up with an M1009 CUCV Blazer. Lastly, my search for an M37 ended up with finding one outside of a Fire Station 25 miles from home.

The jeep is neat, the Blazer utilitarian, but the M37 just has that stance that screams testosterone.

Finally pulled off both the top and its frame yesterday:

Top off, windshield folded down, sunny skies, high 60's, tooling around town...THAT'S BIG FUN !

Now I just need to get the bugs out of my teeth.
