This thread got me curious about mine, so I checked it. I have an early 1951 M-37. My cap is the ribbed type like the second picture and says on it "pressure cap". Have no idea if it's original or not, but it sure looks like it.

Hey Carter,
The chain isn't attached right now-I'm going to tack a small pin into the bed side after passing the end link through it. I too, thought the cap was odd-couldn't even tell what pattern it was until I pressure-washed it off.

The chain is a good idea Gary, no more lost caps, might try putting a chain on mine.

Hi Carter,

I'm sounding dumb again.....but I thought all M37 gas caps had chains to keep them attached. Here's a pic of mine on my '52.....it attaches to the slide out filter tube.
I also noticed my gasket is getting ugly......anybody know who has them......maybe John at Midwest??

regards,
bob

I must be missing one, never thought about it but I believe the others I have owned did have chains but I forgot that, getting old has it's effects on me.

Hi Bob,

John @ Midwest has the gaskets.

My cap has the same chain on the filler tube, just like yours.

I was going to make a reference to the WW2 German M37 in the Hogans Hero's but I couldn't find the picture.

Well looky there.... an early '50's Dodge M37 shown in a circa early forties film setting. Only in Hollywood.
Good eye !!
BTW... what's with the front bumper on that rig. Looks like it might have had a winch at some time but no bumperettes,
just what looks like the original bumper cut out for one. (?)

Looks like it might be a PW Winch adapted to the M's non-winch bumper?

Jerry,

Now your getting the thread off track by asking about winch bumpers.

I was wondering which gas cap the Germans used on their M37s.

Hi guys, Here is my comment: I have a 2 position cap, seems org. with also a venting tube (which I replaced when changing all my fuel lines and gas tank, which worked out very well at a low cost). I am speaking to a 83 yr. old vet of the motor pool WWII, his comment was THE GAS TANK CAP MUST BE VENTED with or without a venting tube going to the carb. elbow. He states the 2 position cap can be improved by buying the manual vented cap WHICH HE APPROVES for a long lasting run with no problems at all. Am I going to purchase a man. vent cap yes ASAP. VT

Hey Vinny,

Good to hear from you. So what exactly is a "2-position" cap? The manually vented cap is the one Carter posted a pic of, with the little metal clip you turn under the cap, right?

thanks,
bob
