I got the "spare" engine on the stand, went to turn it over but no joy, I found that the bloke that had it had stored it where rain could get into the top end via the inlet manifold and #7 has rust in the bore so I backed the piston away from the rust and the thing moved freely after this point. I will now pull the heads, assess the rust damage and if it polishes out with steel wool and re-hones ok that may be the state of play for it for now but if it's totally shagged I'll have to re-think my gameplan, I'll post pics later today....

OK, got the heads off and #7 looked very crappy but after wiping my finger over the rusted area (which I had previously soaked on CRC and engine oil) most of the rust fell off, I then followed it with a light scrape and the rust came away easily, very pleasing....
Once I got the engine turning I checked the other cylinders and found they all had sweat marks in the bore from sitting for so long so the honing will have to be thorough and the minor pitting on #7 looks like it'll come out too, well, enough to be acceptable anyway given that this is a temporary engine for the truck as the origonal is coming out for a full rebuild and once swappoed back this one will get a full rebuild too but as a stopgap solution it is looking good.
I modified my engine stand as I wasnt happy with the way the engine bounced on it a bit so I made the T-Piece to support the engines weight in it's full form and once the heads and valley are off you can remove the T piece and rotate the engine as usual. It's safety first here as with 2 overly curious children you just have to make sure things are right....

I'll put my Honing "hat" on for the weekend and get right into it Bruce, the kerosine, clean rags and hone are already set up ready to go.....Gotta learn to lap valve seats now too, it's fun to learn and this is turning into a real experience.

I have a aluminum four barrel intake for that if your interested! it would take a few pounds off and look good with performance.

I see you have a supervisor in the cab checking things out :D

Thanks for the offer HB but given I am on the other side of the planet with respect to where you are I think the freight would be a dead set killer for that idea, Thanks for the offer though, I do appreciate it...

Carter, I always have the supervisors on the job, the Kids keep me well and truly in line, plus if you jam a finger in something you tend not to colour the air blue when they're about either or they will make me pay so much into the swear jar I'll never be able to afford to finish the truck
I am still looking for some stuff for your "Box O Bits" too.... :D

OK, no matter how I try the power steering box isn't going to work in the RHD configuration and I don't really want to change it back to LHD so I will freshen up the steering box I have...
Question though, Did Gemmer make any different worm and sector ratios for these boxes or is this as good as it gets?

MM :-)

Ok, diffs are back in and swapped about to give me the "newer" diff in the rear, front axles and spindles are in and on, steering gear down to the box itself is assembled and I will reassemble the drag links and tie rod tonight. The engine parts are mostly ready to reassemble but I still have to change the valve stem seals and relap the valve seats. When I do the bearing nut up I tighten right up and back off 1/6 of a turn as per the book but with the outer locking nut is it a matter of torquing up to a specific Ft/Lb ir do I just nip it up until it's firm (say 1/8 to 1/4 turn past initial contact)?

Nice work! I don't know the torque spec on the outer nut-I just tightened mine down until I was sure it wouldn't come loose.

Thanks gary, I'll take a good nip on the nut to make sure it's firm but not about to strip the threads.

Spindle bearing nut torque, if you do a search Charles Talbert did a great write up on how to do it. Try entering "bearing preload" or "spindle bearing preload". Your project looks great.
