so may I ASSume the brass fitting in the middle/upper of this pic is where the oil/wick goes? (starter is on the right) I pulled the plug and there is no wick.

It looks like someone removed the slotted plug (see my picture) and added an elbow. Did you remove the elbow and look for a wick behind it? If the wick is there you should be fine filling the elbow but if it isn't, my guess is that the oil would drain thru in short order. If you do remove the elbow and find the wick, make sure to soak it in oil before putting it back in.

thanks T Highway for the pic! indeed the slotted screw is missing, replaced with an elbow and NPT plug. Appears to have grease in the elbow. Will take off the elbow and check for presence of a wick.

of course as i go to unscrew the elbow it hits the oil dipstick tube. either the tube or the distributer gotta come out to check. sounds like a winter project to me

Loosen the dist and rotate it to remove the elbow. You don't have to remove parts.

ok didnt know it was that simple. next dumb question I have to put it right back to where it was to not screw up how the truck runs? (im a diesel guy never worked on gas jobs!)

If your worried about getting the dist back into the exact same spot then I would recommend that you just unscrew the dipstick tube. It is threaded into the block.

Just reset the timing to 4* BEFORE top dead center.

There is an adapter needed to allow the timing light to get the impulse.
