My question about those wiring harnesses is whether they are rubber-covered fabric or PVC insulation? I'm trying to get away from doing this again in my lifetime...

Well, here's a thought for you. If you're my age, it doesn't matter which kind of wire you use as long as it's new and not NOS. Either kind will outlast you.

If you're my grandson's age, it still doesn't matter what kind of wire you use. You'll probably outlast either kind.

Since I estimate that you're somewhere in between 10 and 65, you're going to have to take your chances. ;)

Most "old-tyme" wiring had a black or "red" rubber insulation over the copper with a braided cotton sheath over that, followed by a layer of colored rubber on the outside. There are companies who make new wire like that for restoration purists. It tends to be a tad pricey, but if that's the kind you have and you want to keep it that way, it will probably outlast you. (I know it'll outlast me!)

The old style wire is more flexible than the new stuff when cold, making it a little easier to work with when your fingers are freezing. On the other hand, it's outside diameter is considerably larger for the same guage as the new wire due to the multiple layers of insulation, which makes it harder to poke through some of the tight spots...especially if you have several wires that have to go through the same hole.
