Don't forget the internal "tubes" or standoffs that surround the bolts and prevent crushing the body work. Be careful not to drop 'em into the body too!

Andy
I thought those tubes were welded to the inside of the body tub?

Good going John!!
:D

My '51 had the guillotine spare fitted at some point and the tubes were not welded in, the flat stock was as shown in your previous post.

Andy, here's another clip from the MWO for moving the spare tire to the door on early trucks. It shows the weld locations.

I have a question about moving the spare to the door. Do you have to open the spare first and then open the door or do they work in conjunction?

The spare tire carrier has to be unlatched and opened before the door can be opened. They are not linked together. For that reason, the spare tire carrier can make exiting from the driver's side less than convenient or swift. And some people find it to be a nuisance.

That's what I thought and why my spare will continue to reside in the bed.

I wasn't going to mention here since it is kind of different BUT, do any of you guys that are converting to the door carry still have the brackets for the bed mount?

Yes, I'm keeping the bed mount for the spare. With the folding jump seat, I'll have a full length seat on the right side, but can also carry a second spare (handy for the M101A1 trailer) if needed.

I am looking for the mount in the bed if anyone has converted and has one laying around.

The reproduction spare tire bed bracket from VPW is actually pretty good. The gauge of the metal appears to be as thick as, or maybe even thicker than, the original.

I'll start a new thread so I don't steal this one, I don't have any of the hardware either.
