Back to the E85 thingie, there was an announcement on my local TV station which reported that there was one station selling E85 for 85 cents per gallon! It was obviously a promotional gimmick, but it was a good one. ;)

The piece of news that you are missing here is that E-blend fuels have a lower BTU rating than straight gasoline; even if it is cheaper that 'pure' gasoline, you end up burning more of the E-blend because of decreased fuel efficiency - this nets you a pretty much zero-sum gain. The drivers of E85 vehicles have reported a 2-5mpg lower fuel economy in the articles that I have read when comparing gasoline to E85.
